Llewellyn Piper

unknown - 1975

Llew Piper (c.1892 – 1975) was a noted New Zealand-born architect who was particularly renowned for his associations with Modern, Moderne and Art Deco architecture in the mid twentieth century. Piper was an Auckland based Architect who practiced, for a time at least, with L.E. Brooker as “Piper and Brooker.” Piper went on to design significant structures in the new, modern, architectural style such as the Auckland Electric Power Board headquarters in Newmarket (1946-1951). He also designed the former Auckland Harbour Bridge Toll Plaza Building (late 1950s), a fine example of its era, which has expensive bronze windows to withstand the salty conditions. Piper also designed the Warkworth Town Hall Extension (1937), which can be considered significant as an expression of progressive ideas and modernity in provincial civic architecture.
